About Chili’s
Larry Lavine opened the first Chili’s Grill & Bar in 1975 in Texas. Menus at this chain restaurant are inspired by Mexican cuisine, namely Tex-Mex. Chili’s was established by its namesake as a casual full-service restaurant serving affordable versions of regional specialties. The first storefront was a repurposed post office.
The first Chili’s restaurant opened on Greenville Avenue in Dallas in the early 1980s, and by then there were over 30 other sites in the United States. Chili’s Bar and Grill was sold by Lavine in 1983 to Brinker International, which also owns the Bennigan’s brand of restaurants.
